Since the name change in 1995, The Sharks brand has grown exponentially and fans from all over the world are proud to call us The Sharks. Originally nicknamed the Banana Boys, rugby supporters through-out the KZN province and indeed the rest of South Africa and the world identify with a brand they are very passionate about.
The establishment of Supporters Club around South Africa translates into a significant following when the team play away from home, notably in places like Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town, not to mention the far-flung smaller venues like Brakpan, Rustenburg and Wellington.
Over the past decade, The Sharks have evolved from a provincial rugby brand to a commercially recognised sporting brand of international acclaim, promoting an intrinsic lifestyle value as well as fashion, entertainment and sporting aspiration. 2009 was the second consecutive year it achieved Superbrand status. Our brand is recognised all over the world and it is supported by a team that consistently plays entertaining and exciting rugby that appeals to a broad spectrum of rugby enthusiasts across the demographic, age and sex spectrum.
The club was formed in 1998 from humble beginnings and is now the second oldest club in the country with its premises in Palmyra Road in Claremont, just a stone throw away from our local rivals the "stormy mountain goats."
The club embraces a family environment for the supporters and there is ample safe parking and children are welcome to play in a safe dedicated area. Membership is across a wide age spectrum from scholars, varsity students to parents with young kids and them many of the more elderly brigade who remember the days when we played in the B division.
